We are all guilty of it: distracted driving. From reading a text from your friend to stargazing while driving, we teenagers have had our fair share of instances when we are not entirely focusing on the road. Many car manufacturers have searched for ways to reduce distractions within the car by implementing features such as a heads-up-display (a projection onto the windshield of relevant information such as upcoming turns, current speed, or incoming texts). However, these features have not exactly proven to aid in reducing the rapidly increasing rate of car crashes caused by distracted drivers. Donoho students, including myself, attended the Alabama Teenagers Against Distracted Driving summit on November 2, 2017– there were several breakout sessions from different organizations briefing on the consequences of distracted driving. In short, there are entirely no excuses for one to drive if they are under the influence or for one to ride with a driver under the influence. Additionally, texting and driving can be a fatal decision for such an insignificant action, so always refrain from any types of distraction while you are behind the wheel.

It’s essential that we come up with ways to remind ourselves of specific the dangers and consequences that follow making a choice to be a distracted driver, so the Focus Group at Donoho has been brainstorming ideas to remind our student body to keep their attention on the road at all times.
